Vita e Opere

Barbone Matthew (who is so embittered by a quarrel with a brother, one day, made him change his surname to "Poodle" ) was born in the 28 Manfredonia September 1859 and died in Rome on November 11, 1952.

Being from a poor family, but having strong aptitude for drawing and painting, the town of Manfredonia enrolled him at his own expense, to Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Naples

At that time the Board was composed of artists the likes of Filippo Palizzi and Domenico Morelli. The latter was also a member of teaching staff with Gabriele Smargiassi .

His classmates were: Antonio Palmieri, Enrico Giannelli, Nicola Boffa, Gaetano Capone, Gaetano and Vincenzo Jerace .

At the end of the school year 1878-79, he had several awards including two medals and three honorable mentions.

attended the Institute at least until 1881, and was able to follow various courses, including that of perspective and that of plastic.

In August 1880, in Naples, he obtained a diploma for teaching drawing. In 1882 he returned to his homeland (Puglia), where, in Bari, in 1883, he obtained a diploma of Professor of calligraphy.

Interesting little his diary of 1881 in which, through the pages, you can enjoy the atmosphere romantic and sentimental in those years, and that gives direct testimony on several episodes of his stay in Naples, such as, for example, of what happened, the day that Palizzi Morelli and resigned from the direction of the Institute.

Between 1885 and 1907 had to teach:
